Combination skin

Combination skin is the result of a combination of oily and dry complexions. It has a greasy central area comprising the T-zone (nose, forehead and chin) and a dry panel made up of the cheeks, mouth and the surrounding areas of the eyes.

What can serve as help for your oily T-zone will naturally be inappropriate for the cheeks, eyes, or jaw areas. By using different products on different parts of your face, you can bring your skin into balance.

How to recognize combination skin: You'll know you have combination skin if some parts of your face feel tightness after washing. They could look flaky and dull or rough. In the T-zone, your skin will appear shiny, feel greasy and you will break out in pimples and blackheads.

Caring for combination skin: Look on this skin type as if it were two different skin types. Treat the dry part of your skin with products appropriate for such complexion and similarly for the oily part of your face.

First, wash your face with a gentle, water-soluble cleanser that could be a gel or mildly foaming. Don’t use bar soaps or bar cleansers. Use a toner all over your face if it does not make your oily patches greasier. Use sunscreen every day, but ensure that it contains one of the following UVA-protecting ingredients: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone. Use foundation and pressed powder with sunscreen.

Caring for combination skin: To care for your skin, begin by using a mild cleanser on your entire face twice a day. Also, use a good moisturizer in the dry areas to increase the water from entering the skin. Don’t use bar soaps or bar cleansers because their ingredients can clog your pores.

Use a toner all over your face if it does not contain ingredients that make your oily areas feel oilier. You can safely use water- and glycerine-based toners but see that they contain antioxidants, water-binding agents and cell-communicating ingredients.

Exfoliate your skin twice a day with a good cleanser that lathers well. This will reduce the amount of oil on the surface of the skin. If you use grains as an exfoliator, don’t rub it in too hard in the skin as this will over stimulate the oil glands.

Use sunscreen all the year round and take care to see that they contain one of the following UVA-protecting ingredients: titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone. Use a good moisturizer on the dry patches and strive to use products that can normalize your skin. These products include those that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs or fruit acids) or retinols, a vitamin A derivative. To control the shine in the oily parts of your face, use oil-absorbing make-up.

You can also use essential oils such as chamomile, lavender and ylang ylang by adding a few drops of the oil to a carrier oil, fragrance and lanolin free skin cream or lotion. You’ve got the promise of a clear and lively skin waiting for you if you follow some of the guidelines mentioned here. You’ve got everything to win, so what are you waiting for? Go ahead and do your best.
