Oils for the skin
Natural oils contain many, many organic constituents such as hormones, vitamins and other natural elements that can benefit the skin. They keep the skin supple and youthful. For best results, massage your whole body before you bathe or shower.
Natural oils are of two kinds: essential oils and carrier or base oils. Of them, essential oils are found in plants and the oils of plants are obtained by distillation or expression. They are highly concentrated and used at low concentration.
The second kind of natural oils, carrier oils, includes almond, sunflower, olive, and walnut which are used in higher concentration in cosmetics. They can also be applied directly to the skin to nourish, take away its harshness and protect it. Often, they are used as a base to dilute essential oils in.
In general, oils are highly penetrating. Not only can they enter through a cell wall very easily and transmit essential nutrients, vitamins and oxygen, but also stimulate cell metabolism and aid in the regeneration process. This in turn has the effect of preventing cells to deteriorate that could otherwise have led to infection and disease. Besides, many oils have antibacterial properties by which means there are fewer chances of sensitive or damaged skin being infected.
Oils have been in use for skin care for centuries and are still preferred today. Not many people know that oils can successfully be used as skin cleansers. These include sunflower, olive and almond oils.
Oils take the dirt off the face and leave the skin feeling clean and nourished. If after doing this, you feel the need for water though your sensitive skin feels dry after this procedure before washing your face. Now, see how soft your skin has become.
Safflower oil is a good choice of oil for the skin as it is rich in essential fatty acids that the body needs to produce healthy cells but cannot produce on its own. These acids take care of the protective function of cell membranes. If your skin does not get adequate nourishment from these nutrients, it loses moisture and elasticity, becomes dry and shows up as wrinkles and fine lines.
The anti-bacterial properties of essential oils such as lavender and tea tree help to destroy bacteria and counter acne. Use basil oil to clear pimple breakouts.
For moisturizers, use essential oils such as tea tree, basil, eucalyptus, cedar wood, cypress, lemon and lavender that will help normalize oily skin and, with the help of sage and lemongrass oils, also slow down body oil production.
All skin types can successfully use tea tree oil, chamomile, lavender, geranium, rose, neroli and ylang ylang for their soothing, healing and nutritive, and anti-inflammatory properties. For older skin, Palma Rosa and carrot seed oil are useful in delaying the appearance of wrinkles.
Oils can be beneficial for the skin, as proved above. So, don't screw up your nose at the mention of the word and go ahead and use it for best results.
